What is a Tech Pack?

A tech pack, short for technical package, is a comprehensive document that serves as a blueprint for manufacturing garments. It contains detailed information about a product's design, materials, measurements, construction details, and other specifications necessary for accurate production.

Typically created by designers and technical designers, a tech pack includes:

  • Technical Drawings (Flats): Detailed illustrations of the garment from multiple angles, showcasing design features and construction details.

  • Bill of Materials (BOM): A comprehensive list of all materials, fabrics, trims, and components required to construct the garment.

  • Measurements and Grading Specs: Precise measurements for each size, along with grading rules that define how measurements change between sizes.

  • Construction Details: Specific instructions on stitching, seam types, and other assembly guidelines.

  • Colorways and Artwork: Information on color options, patterns, prints, and placement of any artwork or embellishments.

  • Labels and Packaging Instructions: Details on labeling requirements, tag placements, and packaging guidelines.

The primary purpose of a tech pack is to ensure clear communication between designers and manufacturers, minimising misunderstandings and reducing the likelihood of errors during production. By providing a detailed and organised set of instructions, tech packs help streamline the manufacturing process, control quality, and manage costs effectively.

In summary, a well-prepared tech pack is essential for transforming a design concept into a finished product, ensuring that the final garment aligns with the designer's vision and meets the desired quality standards.
